About us

The Department of Justice delivers legal, court and supervision services to the people of NSW by managing courts and justice services, implementing programs to reduce crime and re offending, managing custodial and community-based correctional services, protecting rights and community standards and advising on law reform and legal matters.

Courts and Tribunal Services support the NSW community by providing access to justice services, through the protection of rights and public safety initiatives. The Courts and Tribunal Services division provides efficient administrative and corporate support to NSW courts and tribunals.

About the role

The Research Associate is responsible for undertaking research and drafting submissions and other policy documents on issues of a legal, legislative or administrative nature, as required by the President of the Children’s Court and Executive Officer.

The role also
  • Assists with the delivery of a range of complex projects and initiatives as directed by the manager to assist with the development and implementation of the President’s strategic objectives.
  • Provides high-level executive assistance & support to the President of the Children’s Court and Executive Officer and manages committees chaired by the President.
  • Undertake legal and social research from a wide range of sources to develop proposals for legislative or policy reform to address issues of judicial, government or community concern.
Essential Requirements
  • Tertiary Qualifications in Law and admitted (or eligible to be admitted) to the legal profession under the Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW) No 16a or a corresponding law.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly develop a thorough understanding of the legislation and legal principles that governs the jurisdiction.
  • Ability to prepare written and oral advice on legal, legislative and administrative matters
About you
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Competency in legal and social research methods and an understanding of legislation, polices & procedures relating to the operation of the Children’s Court.
  • Strong verbal and written communication
  • Excellent organisational skills – ability to organise, take initiative and follow-up independently

  • The Research Associate will be required to communicate with judicial officers and a wide range of senior staff from both government and non-government organisations on behalf of the President of the Children’s Court.  What particular qualities and skills do you possess that will enable you to carry out this aspect of the role?
