Research Grants Manager
12 month fixed-term Parental leave cover (from January 2025)

The role
The Research Grants Manager at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute will lead our grants team to secure vital funding for our groundbreaking cardiovascular research. You will oversee the entire grants lifecycle, to ensure alignment with our research priorities while fostering strong relationships with key stakeholders. This role combines day-to-day operational management, hands-on administration, exceptional communication and organisational skills.
What we will trust you with
- Lead operational planning and delivery of the grants support program.
- Provide guidance on research funding schemes and topics such as community engagement and research impact.
- Oversee and make decisions on day-to-day operational aspects of the grants process, managing the pre and post award Research Grants Officers:
- Pre-award: identifying and communicating funding opportunities, interpreting guidelines, and supporting application reviews.
- Post-award: executing funding agreements, submitting variation requests, and ensuring compliance with budget and reporting requirements.
- Coordinate the Institute's submissions to government and other agencies.
- Provide advice and information on research funding issues, identifying emerging opportunities and trends.
- Maintain expert knowledge of key funding bodies and government policies.
- Develop and maintain stakeholder relationships with funding organisations, such as National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Australian Research Council (ARC) and National Heart Foundation (NHF), UNSW Sydney Research Grants and Contracts and St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney.
- Engage with the sector and liaise with organisations such as the Australian Association of Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI).
Does this sound like you?
- Tertiary qualifications (Honours degree or higher) in Science or Engineering field.
- Relevant experience working in a grants office, managing competitive medical grants or experience with medical funding bodies and their schemes is desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise, mentor, and manage team members.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and issues management skills, in a scientific research environment.
- Knowledge of national regulations related to research administration.
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, database management, and financial packages.
- Excellent time management and prioritisation skills.
- Skilled in coordinating complex processes.
- Exceptional record-keeping skills.
