Course Overview

This two day internationally accredited course has been developed to standardise the teaching of cardiac arrest and resuscitation management.

The ALS2 course consists of lectures, practical workshops and cardiac arrest scenarios, providing the opportunity to practice skills and apply knowledge.

The course will emphasise the importance of teamwork prior to safe transfer into a critical care environment.

Basic Life Support skills will be assessed during the course and competency in this is expected prior to attending. While the course covers advanced resuscitation skills it is also designed to develop leadership and team skills in managing such emergencies.

  • Causes and Prevention of Cardiac Arrest
  • Acute Coronary Syndromes
  • ALS Universal Algorithm
  • Rhythm Recognition
  • Airway Management
  • Defibrillation

The ALS2 course manual is mailed out approximately three to four weeks prior to the course date. There is a pre course MCQ to complete and this is issued along with your manual.

To obtain an ALS2 certification, participants must meet the continual assessment requirements throughout the course and on the afternoon of day two satisfactorily manage a simulated cardiac arrest (practical assessment) and complete the post course MCQ.

On successful completion of the course an electronic certificate is issued which is valid for four years from the date of the course.

Should you be interested in becoming an ALS2 instructor please express this interest to the faculty at the start of the course.

This course is jointly accredited by the Resuscitation Council (UK) and the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC).
Should I attend an ALS1 or ALS2 Course?

ALS1 is a one day course ideal for those in healthcare with limited or infrequent exposure to crisis events needing advanced life support training.

ALS2 is designed for healthcare professionals expected to apply those skills taught as part of their clinical duties, or to teach them on a regular basis. Appropriate participants include doctors and nurses working in critical care areas (e.g. ED, CCU, ICU, HDU and acute admissions units) or in the resuscitation/medical emergency team and paramedics.

Medical students, nurses and other healthcare providers not covered in the groups above may be encouraged to complete the ALS1/Immediate Life Support (ALS1/ILS) course. Those with a particular interest in resuscitation should then consider attending an ALS2 course, where appropriate.

Further details on the ALS1 and ALS2 courses are provided by the ARC at
