Australia's highest-ranking institution has come in at number 34 on a global table. 

The latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings list has been released, tracking 1,799 universities across 104 countries and regions.

The top places were taken by the University of Oxford, Harvard University, joint third place for the University of Cambridge and Stanford University, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 

Ten Australian universities made it to the top 200, with the University of Melbourne ranked highest at 34 in the world. 

Other local schools to be named included Monash University, the University of Queensland, University of Sydney and Australian National University.

Monash University went up a ranking, while the Australian National University went down.

The University of Adelaide rose 23 places, the University of Technology Sydney went from 143 up to 133 and Macquarie University jumped from 192 to 172.

The Group of Eight (Go8) Universities - a collective of some of Australia’s oldest and largest universities - notes that seven of its eight members made it into the top 100 of the list. 

Go8 chief executive Vicki Thomson says local schools deserve recognition and congratulations.

“More Australian universities have gained ground rather than dropped in the rankings, which is testament to the overall quality of our higher education sector,” she said.
