Australia’s first supply chain innovation body has been formally launched in Sydney.

The Alliance for Supply Chain Innovation (ASCI) is a collaborative alliance between industry and tertiary education centres.

ASCI has been described as an attempt to facilitate inter-corporation dialogue in the logistics industry, with a role to ensure industry research activity.

The Alliance has stated that the reasons behind its inception include:

  • Lack of unified approach to the relevant challenges in the Australian Economy
  • Lack of Multi-disciplinary Research Skills
  • Lack of Research Project Management Skills
  • Shortage of experienced researchers in this domain
  • Fragmented and sometimes insufficient expertise
  • Absence of an Independent Voice for Researchers

Institutions participating in ASCI include the Australian Road Research Board, Bond University, CSIRO, Wollongong University, Victoria University, the Universities of Western Sydney and Tasmania, GS1 Australia, the University of South Australia Curtin University, Sydney University of Technology, RMIT University and Monash University.

Affiliates include the Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics of Australia and the National Transport Commission.

The goals outlined by the ASCI in its launch include:

  • Focusing on Defined Key Areas of Research
  • Securing the support and collaboration from Universities and Research Institutions
  • Securing support and collaboration across the broader Industry, Government and Academic sectors
  • Ensuring critical mass of researchers
  • Securing long-term funding for research.
