Carbon capture research project breakthrough
The Federal Government has announced the successful completion of a $10 million key research milestone at the Otway Project, with the Federal Minister for Innovation Senator Kim Carr saying the completion will accelerate the development of the carbon capture and storage (CSS) industry around the world.
Senator Carr and Resources and Energy Minister Martin Ferguson congratulated the Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC) on developing the world’s first single well test that can be used to evaluate the CO2 storage capacity and security of geological carbon storage worldwide.
Senator Carr said the CO2CRC’s work in leading the international research team that has made this significant breakthrough demonstrates the benefits of collaboration.
“As a result of this latest research, industry can now cost-effectively determine how much carbon dioxide can safely be stored in a particular location,” Senator Carr said.
“This will, in turn, help accelerate the deployment of CCS projects, both in Australia and internationally with the single well test to be used in countries such as China, the US, Canada, the UK and Europe.
“CCS has the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increased international interest in CCS technologies opens up significant opportunities for Australian research and innovation.”
Currently, the C02CRC has received $18.6 million in funding.
